Nectar by Blue Fern Beauty

"Nectar by Blue Fern Beauty" is a promotional motion graphics piece for a fictitious product and brand. Nectar and the brand Blue Fern were inspired by the marketing trend of plant-based and clean beauty. I looked at products like the Glow Recipe Dew Drops, brands like Ilia and Honest, and the overall style of luxury brand print advertising.

Before starting the design boards, I created a set of style guidelines for colors, fonts, line weights, and the general principles of how I wanted to approach the overall visual style.

Stylized fonts
No very dark or saturated colors
Focus on botanical elements with some decorative text

I created this piece through photo manipulation and a few hand-drawn elements animated in After Effects. I used a lot of expressions to create automated repetition and arrangement of each part of the kaleidoscope effect.

The actual “product” was modeled and rendered using Cinema 4D and Redshift.

Specific Feelings

This project was based on a list of ten German words which describe incredibly specific emotions. I attempted to create motion graphics with varying levels of abstraction that capture these feelings. For more information see my preproduction process book below.

All the translations below are sourced from several online resources and are my best understanding of the meaning behind the words. However, I do not speak German myself. This was a visual interpretation challenge and not a exercise in learning German but any notes on the translations below from German speakers is welcome.

1. Luftschloss – Castle in the air, longing for an unrealistic dream.

2. Torschlusspanik - a sense that time is running out, feeling like you do not have time to do everything you want in life.

3. Fremdschämen – Second-hand embarrassment

4. Sehnsucht – intense yearning or longing, usually for a person

5. Sontagsleere – boredom and a feeling of emptiness when there is nothing to do or look forward to. Specifically on Sundays. 6. Mutterseelenallein – a feeling of profound isolation, being utterly alone. Often used for someone going through a hard time. 7. Abgrundanziehung – the excitement of looking down to from a high place and the strange urge to jump.

8. Fernweh – longing for a place you've never been

9. Waldeinsamkeit – the spiritual serenity experienced while walking through the woods or experiencing nature.

10. Gemütlichkeit – a sense of comfort and belonging in a familiar place, coziness.

National Reptile Breeders' Expo Promotion (Unofficial)

This piece was created as a promotional piece for the National Reptile Breeders' Expo held in Daytona Beach Florida August 17th and 18th 2024. I researched the existing branding for the event and since it was pretty minimal also looked at the branding of sponsors and similar events. I pulled out some common elements and a prevalent color scheme. I then looked at fabric and different way of using patterns to fill drawings as a way to add some more interest and make this piece unique.

I used the vector tools in Toon Boom Harmony to create all of the draw assets and did the compositing and animation in Adobe After Effects. I chose reptiles that are popular pets and made sure to exclude any that are prohibited in Florida and thus could not be brought to this particular event. The backgrounds are inspired by terrariums, both the practical and decorative aspects.
